Roy calls debt lift without cuts “nonstarter” in sign of tough path forward

As GOP leaders huddle privately on next steps, House hardliner Rep. Chip Roy trashed the just-failed funding plan and signaled he wants more cuts to any future bill.

Roy came directly from the House floor, where he gave a fiery floor speech opposing his own party, yelling at fellow Republicans in their seats and pointing his fingers at them, saying they don’t have self-respect. Some in the chamber applauded.

Roy, a member of the House Rules panel, said it’s unclear what happens next.

“The vote just occurred,” he said. “We gotta go talk and see what’s next.”

Roy was among dozens of Republicans who opposed the new bill, despite President-elect Donald Trump’s eventual endorsement.

Tensions have been running high between Roy and Trump camps today: The president-elect earlier today posted on Truth Social that Roy was “weak and ineffective” and called for a primary challenge.
