Steve Bannon says Johnson "has to go" after failed government spending bill

Steve Bannon, former aide to President-elect Donald Trump, said House Speaker Mike Johnson should be removed from his position in House leadership after negotiating a bipartisan government funding bill that collapsed after Trump publicly opposed it.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday, Bannon ridiculed Johnson for agreeing with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on a bill that he called “1,500 pages of sell out” to Democrats.

“Johnson’s not up to the test. He’s gotta go, right? He’s gotta go,” he said. “Johnson clearly has to go. He doesn’t have that — he doesn’t have what we call the right stuff, right? That– that combination of guts and moxie and savvy and toughness.”

Bannon later called Johnson’s negotiations with Democrats to pass a government funding bill a “political mortal sin” and labeled the bipartisanship between the two House leaders a “cancer.”
